Cambodia has had a complex and often painful relationship with the United States. Just how much responsibility the United States bears for Cambodia's violent recent history is still vigorously debated. Yet it's clear that through its actions -- and inaction -- the American government has had a lasting impact on the lives of millions of Cambodians. And Cambodia has played an important part in shaping U.S. history, from galvanizing domestic opposition to the Vietnam War to reawakening American consciousness of war crimes.
