The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has released the name of a suspect in a shooting that injured three people, including a police officer, and killed one person early Thursday.
Suspect 37-year-old Lakeem Keon Scott had a pistol, an automatic-style rifle and ammunition with him when he allegedly opened fire on a Tennessee highway on Thursday morning.
Preliminary findings in the investigation “indicate Scott may have targeted people and officers after being troubled by recent events involving black people and law enforcement officers in other parts of the country,” local station WJHL reported.
Jennifer Rooney, 44, a newspaper carrier, died in the shooting, and a police officer was injured in the attack.
The shooting happened prior to an attack at a protest in Dallas that killed five police officers and injured nine others, including seven officers. The suspect in that attack has been identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, who served in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and who told officers on Thursday night that he was upset by recent police shootings.
In Balwin, Missouri, an officer was shot Friday during a traffic stop, according to the St. Louis County Police Department. The suspect, who was pulled over for speeding at approximately 11 a.m. local time, left the car to shoot at the officer.
“Make no mistake, we believe that Ballwin officer was ambushed,” St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said.
Another officer was injured Friday in south Georgia after a man, who called 911 to report a break-in, shot the officer who responded to the call. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that there is currently no indication that the shooting is connected to the Dallas attack.
